The mayor watched the town grow more adept in the petty magic, but he and the boy both felt that the stones had so much more potential than just creating light and fire. He called a town meeting to set up a working group to do more research into the stones. He took those who seemed most talented. They started off working in the mayors house, but after several explosions decided that it would be better to concentrate their studies further away from the town. Resultantly they decided to move their research further afield from the town. They set up a tower for their research purposes in the desert, not too far from the town to get supplies.
Those who left to the tower in the desert did not return except for short visits and to boast of their achievements in the local pubs. Once a month, a group of people from the settlement would trek to the tower with supplies for the mages, as they were becoming to be known. Many people volunteered for this duty, as the mages generally performed a few displays of the knowledge they had gained from the stones. Occasionally the inhabitants of Derlinderry would see flashes of light or hear distant rumbles of explosions echoing towards the harbour from the tower, and a few eyebrows would be raised. The people began to see the mages as a group of eccentrics, loveable but impractical, holed away in their tower, secluded from reality. "As mad as a mage" became a constant by-word among the people.
Those in the tower were so fascinated by what they were doing, that even if they knew the attitude of those from the village, they didn't care - what did they know about the power of the stones, anyway? It was here that after 25 years of research the mages discovered that the magic of the stones could be separated into 5 kinds, fire, earth, water, air and sorcery.
In the meantime, in Derlinderry a great discovery had been made. Some of the children had been playing in the caves, looking for stones, and had found a tunnel leading deep underneath the village. In these tunnels they had found a wealth of blue stones - and one stone almost as big as the stone of Sistrina in Sistrine. The town council sent a messenger to the tower. But as the messenger was only half way there he was surprised to see the mages hurrying towards the town.
"We have found a large Stone of Sistrina - larger than any we have seen" stuttered the messenger.
"Stone of Sistrina? No such thing, dear boy - you've found a blue stone, just a rather large one" said the Mayor as he hurried past
As the mages made their way through the town, the people came out onto the streets to see them - a strange sight they were too. Their clothes were old-fashioned, the men had wild beards and the women long unkempt hair. They each held a finely crafted staff studded with blue stones, each staff beautiful to look at and intricate. The mages plunged into the caves and disappeared from view. The people shrugged their shoulders and went back to their business.
The next day the mages had returned, and the mayor called a meeting.
"Good people of Derlinderry, this discovery could change your lives for ever! Underneath this village is a wealth of blue stones! We can turn this sleepy little fishing village into a city that would be the envy of Sistrina itself! My friends and I have spent many years studying to master the magic of the stones, and we know how to control it. We would like to pass on this knowledge to others - we would like to found a place of learning and research within Delinderry - if you would allow us."
The people of Derlinderry agreed to this and the mages set to work on constructing what is now known as the Towers of Derlinderry. According to the legend, the mages, lead by the Mayor went once more to the caverns underneath the city and raised a structure they found there, a curios building made out of pale yellow and grey stone. The towers were constructed through the use of magic, magic used by drawing on the Stone of Sistrina found in the caves. They constructed towers for each of the four elements around the central tower, which was dedicated to the study of sorcery. Emissaries were sent out to reach other outposts of civilisation, to try and attract students, and soon people turned up from various parts of the realms to study magic. However, it was not only prospective students who came.
Mantila, a High Priestess of Sistrina marched into the town, followed by a retinue of Clerics and Knights, demanding to see the heretic who called himself the "Mayor".
